14 Ways To Enhance Your Beauty From Within

The signs of beauty – lean muscle, bright eyes and lustrous hair – are a reflection of inner health. When it comes to beauty, what’s on the inside counts. If you only focus on external beauty, by caring more about your foundation than your fatty acid intake, you’ll be left with a ‘skin deep’ beauty that’s unsustainable.

If you want clearer skin, sparkling eyes, strong nails and healthy hair, then you need to concentrate on what you’re putting into your body. By increasing your intake of enzymes, minerals, antioxidants and nutrient-rich foods, you’ll get that lit-from-within glow we all know and love. Here are some of the principles I’ve garnered throughout my years as a clinical nutritionist.

  1. Eat real food: This has to be the ultimate tip and the foundation of the JSHealth nutrition philosophy. Feed your skin by ensuring your diet is rich in protein, healthy fats, fibre and complex carbohydrates.
  2. Avoid processed and packaged foods: They’re often laced with added sweeteners, sugars, processed ingredients and other nasties.
  3. Limit gluten and refined sugar: In my clinical experience, these are common triggers of skin irritation and inflammation. Sugar causes hormonal havoc and breaks down collagen, which keeps our skin supple.
  4. Reduce dairy intake: I’ve found dairy to be problematic for skin, but I like to enjoy some organic versions of dairy from time to time.
  5. Eat more greens: I make a real effort to enjoy greens with every meal. To sneak some into your daily diet, check out my kiwi, greens and ginger smoothie.
  6. Eat protein with every meal: Our body’s cells need the amino acids to repair, including skin and hair cells. Enjoy organic animal proteins as well as plant-based sources such as chlorella and spirulina.
  7. Eat antioxidant-rich foods: Antioxidants neutralise the effects of free radicals, which are substances that damage the body’s cells. By doing so, they fight the signs of ageing and boost immunity. Some great antioxidant-rich foods are berries, greens, nuts, and seeds.
  8. Drink water with lemon: Every day, drink loads of water with lemon. It’s detoxifying and aids gut health.
  9. Clean the gut and liver: We absorb all of our nutrients in the gut, which is why gut health is key to making us look and feel our best. When our bodies are clogged with toxins, they can’t perform at their best. See my tips for optimal gut health here.
  10. Zinc it up: Zinc is one of my favourite minerals. It’s known for re-building collagen, which prevents the signs of ageing and skin damage. It also assists with scar repair and hormonal balancing. Check out my vitamins for hair and energy, which are rich in zinc and iodine.
  11. Love vitamin C: Vitamin C is fabulous for skin health as it’s very high in antioxidants. It also nourishes the adrenal glands, helping with stress.
  12. Sleep: It’s called beauty sleep for a reason, so try to get eight hours of shut-eye each night.
  13. Rest: If you’re stressed, it will show on your skin in the form of inflammation and breakouts. Combat this by scheduling in daily downtime such as a power nap, yoga, Epsom salt bath or putting your legs up against the wall for 10 minutes.
  14. Be mindful of what you put on your skin: Your skin also absorbs every single thing that you put on it, which is why it’s so important to be mindful and cut down on the chemicals you’re exposed to wherever you can.
