Elle Macpherson is an Aussie Icon. You might know her as ‘The Body’, a nickname she acquired during her incredible career as a one of the world’s best-known supermodel. In recent years, she’s turned her entrepreneur eye towards her lingerie line and now her superfood line, WelleCo. Elle is also a mother of two and is hugely passionate about health and wellness. We’re so excited to share her Day on a Plate with you today.

 

Tell us a little bit about yourself …

I am a mother to my sons Flynn, 20, and Cy, 15, and I live in Miami, Florida. I am also the co-founder of Australian brand WelleCo. We produce plant-based, vegan dietary supplements designed by leading nutritional doctors using carefully formulated ingredients derived from wholefoods. In easily absorbable powder form, they are designed to nourish the body’s 11 systems from the inside-out. Our customers first report feeling the difference, mainly with energy and weight loss, then seeing the benefits in their skin, hair and nails. It is a good barometer for a beautiful healthy nourished body from the inside out. We are proud to have spearheaded this revolutionary change in the wellness market.

What was the ‘uh-ha’ moment that inspired you to get into health and wellbeing?

Four years ago, when I turned 50, I realised that what kept me fit and healthy in my 20s didn’t work for me anymore. At the same time, my WelleCo business partner, Andrea Horwood, and I were seeing a global shift in wellness. We were compelled by the growing concept of plant-based nutrition and good gut health – and the concept that when you are healthy on the inside, it shows on the outside.

When we founded WelleCo and SUPER ELIXIR Greens, there was nothing like it on the market. Beauty was considered skin-deep and the focus was on topical products. Since then, the industry has gained momentum, especially at the premium end, and plant-based supplements remain intrinsic to our business. A healthy gut is the key to feeling more energetic, having quality sleep, a stronger immune system, improved digestion, stabilised moods and great skin.

Talk us through a typical day in your life …

5 am: I wake early and lie in bed for about half an hour. I like to start my day as holistically as possible. I practise mindful breathing, I meditate and set my intentions for the day. Also, I have a no screen policy in the morning.

5.30 am: Once I’m up, the first thing I drink is warm water with lemon. I used to have two strong espressos to ramp-up my energy, but all it did was deplete my adrenals. Now, if I feel that I need a boost, I just add cayenne pepper and agave to lemon water – it really works!

6 am: I wake my son, Cy, for school, then take two teaspoons of SUPER ELIXIR Greens in 500 ml of filtered water. Knowing that my body has all the nutrients it needs for the day ahead is the best way to start my day. It benefits everything from my energy levels, sleep patterns and skin. It also cuts my morning sugar cravings.

6.30 am: I always eat breakfast with Cy. I love my Nutribullet and Angel 8500 juicer — I may not be the best cook, but I’m a super smoothie maker. I am a big believer in vegetable juicing, which I try to do three times a day. I include garlic, turmeric, ginger, romaine lettuce, coriander, parsley, cucumber, sprouts and a whole lemon. It’s tough at first but the benefits are so great. If I’m not feeling well, I’ll take a fresh wheatgrass shot 15 mins before having my morning juice.

Sometimes, I have a bowl of raw oatmeal with agave, or a raw chia pudding soaked in almond milk with cacao nibs or stevia and cinnamon and other spices. The WelleCo CHAI TEA is delicious soaked in almond milk as well.

6.45 am: I dress in my workout gear and drop Cy at school, before heading to a yoga class or for a swim. I prefer not to go to the gym as I’d much rather be outside, riding my bike, doing yoga or swimming laps. If I’m travelling, I like to go for a jog and explore where I am. I like to take 20 minutes every morning to sit in the sun for the natural vitamin D. It’s a great boost for the immune system.

9 am: I shower and do my makeup, which I prefer to keep very natural. My everyday beauty regimen starts with cleansing my face, exfoliating and moisturising. Then I dry-brush my body head-to-toe (it’s great for the lymphatic system), take a hot-then-cold shower and moisturise with a French pharmaceutical body creme.

9.30 am: When I’m getting dressed, I like to make sure I feel comfortable. For me, less is more. My favourite off-duty wear is Isabel Marant, Zimmermann, P.E Nation and Céline. I tend to wear flats by Miu Miu, or easy-to-run-in ankle boots by Isabel Marant or Christian Louboutin.

 

 

10 am: After getting ready, I head to work.

10.30 am: I contact my business partner, Andrea, who’s in Australia. I also check calls, emails and go through my to-do list for the day. If I’m feeling hungry, I’ll make a WelleCo NOURISHING PLANT PROTEIN Peruvian Chocolate smoothie with homemade nut milk or half an avocado and water. It helps boost my energy levels and gets me through to lunch.

1 pm: Lunch is usually vegetables, which are a great protein source for me. I have a big raw salad of kale, spinach, cucumber, cabbage, avocado, coriander, pumpkin and sprouts. It’s nourishing, satisfying and bursting with nutrients. I drench it in premium olive oil, as good fats are important to my wellbeing. I sometimes have sardines, because they are packed full of those wonderful omega-3 fatty acids and, as they’re a smaller fish, they have less heavy metal toxins.

3 pm: I pick up my son from school and get him sorted with a snack and homework. I love to hear about his day and sometimes we go for a swim or work out in our home gym together for about 20 minutes.

4 pm: I finish off my phone calls and emails and scroll through our Instagram account to see what our fans have been posting. We kicked off a #14dayreset challenge with P.E Nation for April. Every now and then I need to take a pause and focus on optimum health and this tends to happen after a weekend of dark chocolate! I love hearing how our customers are progressing.

5 pm: I cook dinner for Cy, which is usually a piece of fish or chicken with vegetables.

 

 

6.30 pm: After work, I like to go outside and do something physical. I might go for a quick bike ride with the dogs or wind down with a vinyasa flow. I love the natural movement of it; it’s a great connector of breath and body. It’s also a great sweat which is important for detoxification and the lymphatic system.

7.30 pm: If I’m staying in for the night, I prepare a super healthy meal for myself if I haven’t eaten with Cy already. I’m vegan at the moment, so I make veggie wraps, otherwise, it’s veggie pizza or vegetable pasta with pesto. When I feel like having something sweet, I’ll have my favourite dark chocolate or vegan ice-cream – or sometimes both!

 

 

9 pm: A good night’s sleep is hugely important to me. I have always found it difficult to unwind, so now I have a ritual that works really well: I make a pot of WelleCo SLEEP WELLE Calming Tea, create a calm space, wear very light cotton pyjamas (if I wear anything at all) and spritz the room and my pillows with our SLEEP WELLE Calming Mist. 9.30 pm: While I sip my tea, I do some journalling. I love to make a list of what inspired me during the day. I believe that appreciation for everything I have in my life is key. I have a no-screen policy in the bedroom. Instead, I love to read, especially autobiographies. My nightstand is always fully equipped with a bottle of filtered water, eye cream and WelleCo Cacao Lip Balm, which is orange scented and super hydrating.

Coffee or tea?

Macha tea. I prepare a pot using my traditional tea set from Japan. I also drink our SLEEP WELLE Calming Tea, which is a unique medicinal blend of valerian root, hops and skullcap.

What is your indulgence of choice?

I love rich 80 per cent dark chocolate and sometimes I even make my own.

 

 

What are three foods you can’t live without?

I’d have to say my SUPER ELIXIR Greens which I add to filtered water or a green smoothie every morning without fail. It was formulated for me by Dr Simone Laubscher PhD. and it’s WelleCo’s best-selling elixir. Honestly, I can’t think of a better way to start and energise my day.

It means I get all the deliciousness and health benefits without the need to smoke, roast or fry them. They are a great snack or topping for salads.

Sprouts are the best add-on for my salads and I love juices because they are so nutrient rich. My new luxury is my sprouts dealer. I have one who makes a weekly delivery of the sprouts to my house.

 

 

What’s your go-to snack for those days on the run?

Do you have any last words of advice or tips for those starting out on their health journey?

Drink as much water as you can, eat more plants and get lots of sleep. When it comes to overhauling your health and fitness regime, it is OK to start and fail, as long as you keep on trying.
