Healthy Highlight: Dandelion Root

For me, one of the toughest parts of the JSHealth Restart Plan is replacing my 1 cup of coffee each day. I have cut down significantly over the years, but for my health, sleep and peace of mind, it’s so important to have an alternative that provides a similar warmth, comfort and bold flavour without all the caffeine.

This is why I love dandelion root.

Most people think of dandelions as a weed that must be removed from our gardens. But when it comes to our bodies, dandelion acts as a phenomenal herbal medicine. It’s an impressive source of beta-carotene, vitamin C, potassium, iron, calcium and zinc – and believe it or not, it includes more protein than spinach! Every part of the dandelion is packed with antioxidants, which is part of the reason I always included it during a detox. It helps to remove toxins from both the liver and kidneys, as it helps them clear out waste and aid hydration.

So how do I use it? As a glorious tea! I absolutely love dandelion root tea as a healthy replacement for my morning coffee. A dandelion root herbal blend is like a miracle – it has a similar body and bitter but creamy taste. You can find a straight dandelion root tea bag, but I also love specially crafted blends that remind me of a delicious latte. I generally use Bonvit brand, but Dandy is also easily available online.

To make a cleansing, healing dandelion tea latte, simply strain 1 heaped tablespoon of dandelion coffee in 1/2 mug of hot water, then add 1/2 cup of frothed almond or coconut milk. Add a few Stevia drops and cinnamon, and you’ve got a cozy cup.
