Healthy Highlight: Lemon

In honour of the JSHealth Restart, I wanted to spotlight my most tried-and-true cleanse-friendly foods this month. It only seemed appropriate to start with an absolute detoxification powerhouse – lemon.

This deliciously sour fruit seems to pop up everywhere – as a garnish in your water or iced tea at the cafe, as an accent to a fresh fish dinner, and as a zesty addition to baked treats. But did you realize that this simple fruit is amazingly complex? Its’ ability to detox the body is astounding!

Lemons stimulate the liver’s bile production to help push toxins out – basically, it converts toxins into a water-soluble form so they can effectively leave your body. They also fire up digestive juices, which is why a little lemon is a perfect way to start the day! Enjoying warm water with lemon first thing in the morning helps your system balance out acidity and prepare to digest and metabolize food the rest of the day. Just be sure the water isn’t TOO hot so as not to destroy the lemon’s benefits. You can enjoy lemon later in the day to hydrate and cool off, too – try it in one of my healthy homemade vitamin water recipes.
