The Top 6 Reasons to Go for Coyo

CoYo – the Dairy-Free, Vegan & Paleo Yogurt

After my recent post featuring the health benefits of Greek yoghurt, quite a few readers asked about my thoughts on dairy-free versions. I’m happy to tell you that there is indeed a delicious alternative: coconut yogurt, or coyo, is another favourite! I often enjoy it when I’m on a seasonal detox, or just when I’m looking for a fun change of pace. If you’re currently on my Restart Plan, this is a great time to give it a try!

Why coyo?

It’s plant-based. Coconut yogurt is, of course, made of coconut – this makes it a fantastic option for anyone who is lactose-intolerant, has issues digesting dairy or who follows a vegan or paleo diet.

It’s packed with healthy fats. Coconut yoghurt is pressed from the white meat of coconut, which has been shown to help lower bad cholesterol and may help reduce belly fat.

It’s rich in antioxidants. Coconut naturally contains antioxidants, which help rejuvenate cells and remove free radicals.

It’s a good source of probiotics. Most store-bought coyo has probiotics added, which as I always say are essential for good gut health. Learn more about the importance of probiotics in my latest eBook, The Healthiest Gut.

It’s full of fiber. The fiber in coconut helps with digestion and can ease constipation – more on this in The Healthiest Gut, too!

You can make it at home. Believe it or not, you can make your own coyo! I like this recipe from The Kitchn and this one from Oh She Glows.

Making coyo is a great option because you control the ingredients – some store-bought versions are filled with sugar and additives, so you have to be careful what you purchase.

A few good brands to try are CO YO, five:am, Coconut Grove, SO Delicious and Liberte. If you can, go for the plain version – this will have less sugar, and you can add your own fresh fruit, chia, nuts and seeds, homemade granola, etc. Even better!
