My JSHealth Guide To Enjoying The Holiday Season – Without Deprivation!

Healthy Holidays

The silly season is upon us! We’re all about to jump head first into a few months where the priority is to eat, drink and be merry! And while it’s so important for us to savour this beautiful season, it’s also important to take good care of ourselves and what’s really in our own best interest. Think of it as a gift to give yourself!

To get yourself prepped, I wanted to offer some of my top nutrition and fitness tips to get you through the season feeling sated, satisfied and strong. It really can be the most wonderful time of the year!

Nutrition

Enjoy favorite holiday treats in moderation

  • Don’t deprive yourself – you’ll only be frustrated and more likely to overeat later
  • Commit to one especially indulgent holiday item and savor it mindfully
  • If you splurge, move on – don’t let it ruin your holiday
  • Focus on the real reason for the season – and it’s not food!

Have healthy snacks available

  • Eat a healthy, satiating snack before you go to a party
  • Create healthy versions of your favorite treats to bring to gatherings

Continue to prioritize everyday healthy eating habits

  • Try to add greens at each meal and a daily green juice – helps boost immunity too!
  • Drink 2 liters of water a day – it’s important to stay hydrated, especially if you’re drinking alcohol
  • It’s OK to say no – be confident and very politely say “no thanks”
  • Don’t let one splurge spiral you out of control – recommit to your healthy eating habits right away

Move and rest

Get plenty of rest

  • Aim for 8 hours whenever possible since holiday parties will make this difficult some nights
  • Go into the “Stress Free Zone” – spend at least 10 minutes every day by yourself doing something that relaxes you
  • Switch off from email and social media at some point each day
  • Get your om on – the stressful holiday season is a good time to practice meditation and yoga

Start the day with exercise

  • Get it out of the way on busy days
  • Will help you feel focused in spite of craziness
  • Staying in a routine will mean it’s not as hard to get back on track after the holidays – no need to make this a New Year’s resolution!

Holiday traditions can double as exercise

  • Power shop! The mall is a great place to get cardio in
  • Participate in a holiday fun run
  • Take a family walk after a big holiday meal

Happy Holidays! Jess xx
