What I Do When I Wake Up Anxious

Anxiety can strike at the strangest times – sometimes there’s no reason, no specific cause – it’s just there. And often, for me, it’s first thing in the morning. It can be really hard to shake.

Here are some of the tips and tricks I’ve learnt along my journey to lessen anxiety, take a moment to breathe and appreciate the day before me:


  • I do less – I give up on my to do list knowing that I will have the energy and motivation to do it another day. We always get it done somehow.
  • I practice yoga – even a home practice will do!
  • I take a herbal formula called Neurocalm that contains beautiful calming herbs such as passionflower and magnolia.
  • I take 500-800mg Magnesium dyglicinate or citrate.
  • As a former fad dieter – I ensure I am not feeling anxious about food or my body. If I am… I dive into my book The Healthy Life which contains all the healing tips I used to heal my relationship with food. I let go of the desire to have a perfect body and repeat throughout the day, “I accept my beautiful body” and I ensure I eat very mindfully that day – no rushing! I sit down to every meal and eat calmly.
  • I commit to deep belly breathing – 20 long deep breathes 2-3x/day.
  • I avoid caffeine – no more than my 1 cup of coffee/day.
  • I avoid anything sweet that may cause me to have a blood sugar drop. I focus on lots of greens, good quality proteins and low GI carbs for that day. I try and eat warming grounding foods such as soups, stir fries, curries or slow cooked dishes as opposed to raw meals.
  • I drink lots of chamomile tea – especially before bed.
  • I repeat throughout the day, “I am enough, I do enough”.
  • I remind myself perfect does not exist and relieve myself of the pressure to perform perfectly. So what if I stuff up? Or don’t get something done when I should? Or disappoint someone? I am only human. I am doing my best.
  • I say NO to social arrangements on days like this and avoid alcohol.
  • I switch off from social media AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE THAT DAY. I also commit to my everyday rule of no technology after 7-8pm… Sometimes 6pm! Social media causes huge anxiety!
  • I try not to compare myself to anyone. I have learnt how to do this and its taken me years. Comparison only keep you going backwards, not forwards. What’s the point? Waste of energy!
  • I watch a feel good TV show after work!
