6 morning rituals that keep me healthy, happy and grounded

02 September 2015

Radiate from within! I do these 6 things every morning to set myself up for an amazing day. These are the morning rituals that keep me healthy, happy and grounded. Try one? I’d love to hear your favourite rituals too – please share them with me here and on social media!

Deep belly breathes with positive affirmations. This works absolute magic for me. I love taking a few minutes when I first wake up to center myself. Giving some gratitude and setting positive intentions for the day puts me into the right frame of mind from the start. Before I even get out of bed I set 5 positive affirmations, such as:

“I am healthy.”

“I attract success.”

“I practice gratitude for the abundance in my life.”

Tongue scraping upon rising. This is one of the first things I do once I’ve gotten out of bed. It’s an ancient Ayurvedic recommendation that is believed to boost mental, physical and spiritual health. Scraping the tongue helps removed built up bacteria and toxins in the mouth – and since it’s the connection between your mind/body and the outside world, you want to take good care of it. It’s also thought that removing the coating on the tongue every day actually makes food taste better, too! This something I’ve added to my morning routine that helps me feel cleansed and ready to start my day. Tongue scrapers can be found at most health food stores.

Morning walk, jog or yoga. I like to move my body in a way that’s both enjoyable and centering. Depending on how I feel, I’ll usually go for a walk or a comfortable jog out in nature – being outside is always grounding for me – or I will practice yoga. It helps me connect with my body and feel where I’m at that day.

Hot and cold shower. My grandmother taught me this practice. I switch between hot and cold water to get my blood flowing – it really helps to wake me up and feel alert, but not stressed.

Lemon water. In the kitchen, I prepare myself warm (but not too hot!) lemon water with a pinch of cayenne or fresh ginger. I do this pre-breakfast to help alkalize my system and help fire up digestion. I also love sipping something warm as I prepare breakfast.

Morning almond milk piccolo. It’s a special ritual, and one that I believe contributes to a happier day. I believe in moderation, and my morning coffee is part of that. I love the taste, the smell, and the morning ritual of getting an almond milk piccolo at the local coffee shop. It helps me feel productive and centered – and it’s delicious!
