What Is An Infrared Sauna, Anyway?

18 April 2017

Feeling like you need a detox after a little extra indulgence around Easter? Look no further than an Infrared Sauna – the new health trend sweeping the wellness world.

It’s no wonder infrared saunas have gained a lot of attention lately for their vast health benefits ranging from glowing, dewy skin, relief from muscles aches and pains, improved sleep and detoxification.

During a session you’ll be treated to a private room and left to sweat it out. We recommend all clients try their best to disconnect from the hustle and bustle of life and unwind for just 45 minutes. The idea is that the moment you step into your room it’s 45 minutes of ‘you time’. We encourage clients to use this time to meditate, journal, read or listen to relaxing music. The infrared wavelengths slowly warm your body, so it is normal not to sweat until at least 15 minutes into a session. Infrared sauna therapy is gentle and feels completely different to traditional saunas. Unlike traditional saunas you can breath easy, the heat is gentle and the air is dry.

What is infrared:

Infrared consists of invisible wavelengths which target different areas of the body allowing for a very therapeutic treatment. Near infrared penetrates the epidermis layer of the skin, helping with wound healing, skin conditions such as acne, cell immunity and skin rejuvenation. Far infrared penetrates deep into your tissues, muscles and cells, being most effective at raising your core body temperature, which is great for weight loss and detoxification. Mid infrared can help with the reduction of pain and inflammation in your tissues and muscles.

Benefits of Infrared Saunas:

Detoxification: Sweating is one of the body’s primary ways of detoxing.  Infrared gently heats the body, increasing the core temperate creating a deeper reaction from within your body’s cells to assist the detoxification process.  As your body attempts to cool itself down, it also increases your heart and metabolic rate increasing detoxification.

Anti-ageing and skin health: Infrared has been shown to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, elasticity and firmness in your skin. Regular sweating allows your body to detoxify nasty chemicals, pollutants and dirt lodged within the dermal layer and  has also been shown to improve skin conditions such as cellulite, acne, psoriasis and dermatitis.

Pain relief: Infrared heat helps boost blood circulation in your system and reduce inflammation, pain and tension in the body.

Stress: One of the biggest benefits is relaxation and the chance to de-stress. A single infrared sauna session can help decrease the production of cortisol, the main hormone for stress in the body. If you’ve had a rough day there’s no better place to be than an infrared sauna.

Other ways to boost cleansing:

Acupuncture – Acupuncture promotes detoxification by supporting the immune system, regulating the digestive system and supporting the liver and kidneys, which are vital to eliminating toxins from the body. Acupuncture can also calm and regulate the nervous system, which is key to staying on track and balancing out any withdrawal and detoxification symptoms.

Dry body brushing – Our skin is our largest organ and it absorbs everything we put on it. Dry body brushing helps stimulate our lymphatic system and remove the build up of dead skin on the body. Try adding body brushing to your morning routine before you jump in the shower.

Hydration – When it comes to cleansing there is no better way to cleanse than drinking clean water. Water hydrates every cell in our body and is essential for removing toxins. Spice up your water by adding a dash of lemon, apple cider vinegar or chlorophyll. We love to add a pinch of celtic sea salt to boost minerals, post sweat session.
