The Truth About Protein, From A Nutritionist

16 September 2025

Protein is having a moment in the wellness world — and for good reason. As one of the body’s essential macronutrients, protein keeps us energized, satisfied, and strong. It’s the building block behind so many of our body’s daily functions, from muscle repair to balanced blood sugar and satiety.

As a nutritionist, I love seeing the world finally spotlight protein in the way it deserves. When we understand its role and choose high-quality sources, protein becomes a daily ritual that fuels vitality.

I hope this inspires you to think about the protein on your plate (or in your shaker) a little differently. Not as a fad, but as a timeless nutritional tool — alongside a balance of carbohydrates, fats, and micronutrients — for living your most vibrant life.

With love,
Jess xx

The Science of Protein

Protein is made up of amino acids, which are the building blocks your body uses to repair tissues, create enzymes and hormones, and maintain overall well-being. Protein provides powerful nourishment for both strength and steadiness — fueling the body on physical, mental, and emotional levels. The body can’t store protein the same way it does carbohydrates or fats, so it’s important to aim for a balanced intake of varying protein sources.

Sources of Protein

Protein needs vary from person to person. As a gentle guide, many people feel nourished with around 20–40 g at main meals and 5–10 g at snacks. It is key to listen to your body and explore what sources of protein you enjoy best!

I find protein to be deeply satisfying, providing lasting energy and satiety — below are some of my favorite sources of protein I incorporate across my meals each week.

  • Salmon
  • Chicken breast
  • Eggs
  • Tofu
  • Edamame
  • Cooked lentils and chickpeas
  • Tempeh
  • Chia seeds
  • Greek yogurt
  • Cottage cheese

Supplementing with Protein Powder

Mixing protein powder into your daily routine is an excellent way to fuel whole-body nourishment, however, not all protein blends are created equal!

When choosing a protein powder, it is essential to choose one that meets these marks:

  • Over 20 g protein per serve — to give your body the strength and vitality it deserves.
  • Gut-friendly — blended with probiotics to assist healthy digestion.
  • High-quality protein isolate — for maximum nourishment and easy absorption.
  • Delicious taste and texture — so you genuinely enjoy every shake, smoothie, and recipe.
  • No artificial sweeteners — just clean, considered ingredients.

The JSHealth Vitamins team has been quietly refining our protein blends to fulfill these expectations and raise the standard. Now reformulated for better texture, decadent flavor, enhanced solubility, and the same whole-body support our community loves.

This is easy, delicious, functional nutrition at its finest. The new formulas are launching next week and I can’t wait for you to try!
