If you’ve been part of the JSHealth community for a while, you’ve probably noticed that I am a big believer in self care. Rest is a big part of that, but so is the way you energize yourself at the start of the day. My morning routine can vary from day to day depending on where I am and what I have on the agenda, but one thing is constant: self care. While I may not always have time for each of these things, making a priority for even one of them is so good for your soul. I’ve found they make such a difference in the way I go into my day – I feel calmer, centered and grounded.
Warm lemon water upon rising. Hydration first thing is so important – starting the day with this simple act will set you up for a clearer mind all day. I use my Zip HydroTap for hot filtered water instantly, and then add lemon and a pinch of cayenne or fresh ginger. This helps alkalize my system, fire up digestion, and hydrate me pre-breakfast.
Dry body brushing. This is such a soothing way to connect with your body. Dry body brushing encourages skin cell renewal by shedding dead cells – this results in smoother, brighter skin and better circulation. You can find a natural body brush at most health stores.
Enjoy a breakfast packed with super foods. Your body needs nourishment, and one of the best ways you can take care of it is with a healthy breakfast. I love my oats because they’re so versatile, and such an easy way to add super food toppings. This is a recipe I love to make when I feel like dessert for breakfast:
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract or powder
- 2 egg whites
- 1/2 cup rolled oats
- 2 tablespoons chopped pecans
- 2 fresh dates, pitted
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- a pinch of Himalayan salt
- 1/2 cup filtered water
- 1/2 cup almond milk
- 1 teaspoon stevia powder or maple syrup (optional)
- 1 teaspoon mesquite powder (optional)
- Soak oats in filtered water overnight, if you can.
- In a pot on the stove, add filtered water and almond milk to oats and bring to a boil.
- Once boiling, reduce heat, cover and simmer until the grains are soft (approximately 10 minutes).
- Stir in other ingredients and enjoy.

Savor a single cup of coffee. This is such a special ritual for me, and one that I believe contributes to a happier day. I’ll often walk to the local coffee shop for an almond milk piccolo, but some days I prefer to stay cozy at home and prepare my coffee there with filtered water and freshly ground beans – and a dash of almond milk, of course!
Take a moment for gratitude. I write in a gratitude journal every day. As corny as it might sound, it keeps me grounded and stress-free. You can’t feel stressed when you feel grateful, and this is one of the most loving acts I can do – it helps me take care of myself so I can take care of all of the other important people and things in my life too.
