Day On A Plate: Sharon McGlinchey, MV Organic Skincare

Sharon McGlinchey is the amazing lady behind MV Skincare. MV was founded after Sharon delved into the cosmetic industry and discovered how common toxins are in our day-to-day products. She then embarked upon making her own and her work is now a favourite among many big name celebs (such as Emma Watson!) for it’s purity, effectiveness and honest approach. Sharon is passionate about inner health as much as outer health and has a great approach to life, health & balance.

  1. Tell us a little bit about yourself – who you are and what you do.

I’m a bit of a beauty rebel – a square peg in a round hole – with a passion for skin health. I have a very honest and practical approach to beauty (my satisfaction comes from getting my hands on people and fixing sensitive and problematic skins), this lead to the creation of my plant-powered, organic skincare range- MV Organic Skincare.

I was born in the far North of England and moved to Sydney when I was 18 which makes me an Aussie with a very strange accent!! Business takes me to the UK twice a year which is a win win for me because a) I LOVE London and b) I LOVE and miss my daughter Tess who now lives in London. All I can say is “Thank goodness for FaceTime!”

  1. What was the ‘uh ha’ moment that inspired you to get in to food or health and wellbeing?

The amazing result I achieved back in 1998 while helping a client with a severe petrochemical sensitivity. I couldn’t quite believe something I had made after attending a weekend workshop on ‘how to make natural skincare’ delivered such an impressive result on a client who had been hospitalized with a cosmetic burn!

I had a very strong inkling way back then that this was my destiny.

  1. Talk us through a typical day in your life.

I wake at 6:45am and the first thing I do is drink a huge glass of lukewarm water. Next – my meditation app for 10 mins of ‘Daily Calm’. I’m then ready for 4 x rounds of Salute of Sun which I usually do in my living room because my harbor bridge ‘glimpse’ is still a novelty after 3 years!

My second round of meditation is a funny one – I make an organic de-caf plunger coffee (I know it’s lame – I love the taste of coffee but sadly I’m caffeine sensitive). While my egg is boiling I sit in my mini herb garden & watch the coffee granules sink to the bottom of the plunger- my morning ritual. Mindful coffee consumption? This has conveniently become my impromptu egg timer for perfectly soft boiled eggs.

I dunk my sour-dough soldiers into the eggs- a reminder of my childhood. With this I add different accompaniments; herbed mushroom, ½ an avocado, fetta cheese, herbs from the garden (a must!) + organic EVO of course.

The next 30mins before I jet off to work are dedicated to answering any urgent emails- a number of my stockist & clientele are based in the US & UK so this is how I manage the time-difference.

More than I care to admit (thanks for the reality check!), I pop around the corner for a classic French brioche – as a brunch treat.

A light lunch and grazing technique works best for my energy levels throughout the day. Chopped apples with activated nut butter (made fresh from little raw co.), crunchy lettuce with beans & roast veggies, carrot sticks & hummus, mixed nuts.

Now that my daughter is dream-chasing in the UK, dinner is for just for one.
I love a piece of wild caught salmon with roasted veggies covered in tahini, lemon dressing and sprinkled with the black sesame seeds that I bought whilst in Japan recently. *In fact, I sprinkle those suckers on everything! Otherwise I whip up a veggie dhal with greek yoghurt.

  1. Coffee or tea?

Both! Organic decaf in the morning because the smell is hypnotic. Otherwise I am in LOVE with my MV Radiance Tea, blended exclusively for me by Paddington naturopath Anthea Koullouros. A deep pink coloured treat brimming with skin friendly antioxidants.

  1. What is your indulgence of choice?

Dark chocolate- either Belle Fleur or PANA Raw Fig & Orange. Because- balance.

  1. Three foods you can’t live without?

Clearly, black sesame is like my magic fairy dust for food.
Buffalo Mozzarella

  1. What’s your go-to snack for those days on the run?

If I’m on the run I grab something from Iku Wholefoods (their Tofu fritters are divine)

  1. Any last words of advice or tips for those starting out on their health journey?

80/20 rule! You have to create a lifestyle and food relationship that works for you and your unique life (and body). Be kind to yourself, please. In my industry I see so many women stress about pursuing a totally ‘clean’ life, and this in turn creates stress and self judgement. We’re not designed to be so rigid, celebrate your goals and remove any guilt.
