Tegan Martin is a seriously stunning human inside and out! After winning Miss Universe, she’s launched into the spotlight with features on reality TV and an on-fire modelling career, all while managing to keep it real and be a genuinely lovely person. Tegan is all for women’s empowerment and seeks to encourage and support all women in being happy, natural and confident! And how does one stay healthy with all the demands of being in the limelight? We asked Tegan how she lives a healthy, happy life while being a full-time model and down-to-Earth Aussie icon.

  1. Tell us a little bit about yourself – who you are and what you do.

Where do I start! For those of you who don’t know me my name is Tegan Martin and I basically went from being a full-time hairdresser to working full-time in the entertainment industry overnight! In 2014 I won Miss Universe Australia and the day after started working in a very unique job. This job involved travelling our beautiful country, presenting, modelling and fulfilling my ambassadorial and press commitments. My favourite part of the job was doing mentor sessions and workshops with young girls within different organisations and schools.

  1. What was the ‘uh ha’ moment that inspired you to get in to health and wellbeing?

For me it was when I was diagnosed with chronic fatigue. I had a very stressful year preparing for the International Miss Universe competition, mentally and physically it was just exhausting. Literally overnight I felt my immune system stop working and soon after I got glandular fever and a parasite. From that moment on for a few years my energy was never the same. My ‘uh ha’ moment was me realising I had to start taking extreme care and nourishing my temple, as we are only given one body and it’s a lot easier to prevent than reverse disease. I am so in tune with my body these days. I always rest when my body is telling me to slow down and when I do have optimal energy I thank my body for giving me the gift of energy, something I will never take for granted again.

  1. Talk us through a typical day in your life…

Ok here goes! I start my day tongue scraping, and removing any buildup of toxins from the night before. I then oil pull for 10-15mins and have a huge glass of water afterwards.

Then I take my digestive enzymes and have a glass of lemon water. I wait 10 mins and then start cooking my breakfast.

Breakfast is usually Rice porridge with coconut milk and some organic stewed apples. OR Naturis Rice bread with avocado, tomato, red onion and a sprinkle of goats cheese.

At 12pm I like to rest for 10-30min of meditation. This recharges me and keeps me productive for the rest of the day.

I have to share this concoction of food with you all, I made it when I was half asleep this morning and it was the easiest most delicious healthy breakfast I think I have ever had! Its kind of a cross between a healthy pizza and bruschetta. Dairy and gluten free. Base 1/2 cup almond meal 1/2 cup chia and Lindseed meal (I used @mishbridges breakfast mix) 1 egg Teaspoon of Italian herbs salt and pepper to taste Topping- 1/2 avacado crushed garlic to taste Diced tomato Diced onion Lemon juice Salt + pepper Mix all base ingredients and role flat on a piece of baking paper, bake for 10-15 mins. Mash topping ingredients and cook two pieces of bacon while the base is baking. When base is nice and crispy add topping and bacon and a generous squeeze of lemon juice #healthyrecipe #healthybreakfast #yum #glutenfree #dairyfree

For lunch, I always have to mix things up, I honestly feel nauseous if I eat the same thing for a week straight. I usually do Chicken (marinated in lemon juice/olive oil/salt and pepper) with a salad. My fave salad consists of spinach, cherry tomatoes, red onion, avocado, toasted pine nuts, strawberries and goats cheese. If I am having a meat free week I like to fry a veggie and lentil burger in coconut oil in a frypan with the same salad.

For me afternoon is the best time to exercise, its when I have the most energy. I either do a class at the living room in Coogee, KX pilates, a weight class or go for a super long walk. I rarely push myself with high intensity classes like I used to. Since my days of fatigue this makes me overly tired and gets me off track.

I love slow cooked dishes with brown rice and heaps of fresh organic veggies for dinner. I often do a slow cooked lamb dish and have it for 3 dinners. If not I love Marinated salmon or squid with steamed veggies or salad.

  1. Coffee or tea?

I have been very conscious of not having too much coffee in the past few months (even though I LOVE it). If I do have a coffee it will be bulletproof. I do love my peppermint tea too.

  1. What is your indulgence of choice?

Loving earth salted caramel chocolate! I have a lactose allergy so its my only choice when it comes to chocolate and I’m pretty damn ok with that!
