My Tips For Men Experiencing Hair Loss

08 July 2025

As a nutritionist, male hair loss is something I hear about often — not just from men, but also from partners, friends, and family wanting to understand how they can support someone they love.

Hair thinning can deeply affect confidence, mood, and how someone sees themselves. The good news is, there’s a lot we can do through lifestyle and nutrition to support healthy hair, naturally. While genetics can influence hair health, other factors like nutrient deficiencies, stress, and poor sleep can all accelerate hair thinning — even in men without a strong genetic predisposition. That’s why a whole-body, inside-out approach is key.

I’ve put together my tips for men experiencing hair loss, so you can feel empowered with knowledge and practical ways to help.

  1. Hormonal Balance Matters

One of the key players in male hair thinning is a hormone called DHT (dihydrotestosterone), which is derived from testosterone. In men who are genetically sensitive, DHT can bind to hair follicles, causing them to shrink over time. This is what’s known as follicular miniaturization — hair becomes thinner, weaker, and slower to grow, particularly around the crown and temples. While we can’t switch off this process entirely, we can support the body’s natural hormonal balance through nutrition, an active lifestyle, and stress management.

  1. Nutrients Fuel Healthy Hair

Hair is one of the first places the body shows signs of nutritional imbalance. I always encourage a nutrient-rich, protein and fiber-rich diet filled with leafy greens, nuts and seeds, legumes, eggs, oily fish, and whole grains. Where needed, supplementation can be a helpful tool to bridge the gap. Staying hydrated is also key!

  1. Stress Impacts Everything

Ongoing stress places pressure on every system in the body, including the hair. Chronic stress can push follicles into a premature resting phase, leading to increased shedding — a condition known as telogen effluvium. Daily habits that calm the nervous system are essential for hair health. That might look like a mindful walk, deep breathing, a mindful meal enjoyed without screens, or a gentle wind-down routine before bed. Consistency is key.

  1. Sleep and Recovery Are Non-Negotiable

The body does its deepest healing and repair while we sleep. Poor sleep can affect hormone regulation, stress resilience, and even nutrient absorption — as we’ve seen, all of which can impact hair health. I encourage a consistent sleep routine (I switch my phone off by 8:30pm every night), sip on magnesium to support muscle relaxation and nervous system health, and prioritise enough rest to allow the body to reset.

  1. Support Scalp Health

Scalp health is very often underlooked in the process of growing healthy, strong hair! Healthy blood flow is essential to deliver oxygen and nutrients to the hair follicles, while a healthy scalp microbiome is crucial to grow strong strands. Regular scalp massage with a targeted scalp serum can help support circulation and improve follicle health. Think of the scalp as an extension of the skin, it deserves just as much care and attention.

  1. Choose Gentle Products

Harsh shampoos, over-washing, or stripping products can inflame the scalp and weaken the hair shaft. My tip is to stick to a clean, minimalist haircare routine with gentle products enhanced with natural oils. Our 2-Step Vitamin Haircare is infused with 7 science-backed vitamins, nutrients, and botanicals to balance the scalp microbiome and nurture healthy, strong hair.
