In my clinic, thinning and weak hair was a common concern. I saw just how much hair health affected women’s confidence — brittle and lackluster locks can really take a toll on daily well-being.
I truly believe strong, healthy hair can be your normal. As a nutritionist, I’ve got “good hair days” down to a science — here are my top tips.
Protein and iron-rich foods
The habit: I aim for 20–30g of protein at each meal, and I make iron another key focus to help combat hair fall. Iron-rich foods include red meat, legumes, leafy greens, shellfish (oysters, clams, and mussels), tofu, nuts, and seeds.
The science: Hair follicles are made almost entirely of keratin (a protein), so adequate protein intake directly supports hair structure. Iron matters too! For some people, low ferritin (stored iron) can result in hair shedding. Focusing on high-protein and iron-rich foods helps ensure your follicles are getting what they need to stay strong.
Nourishing hair masks
The habit: I love swimming in the ocean/pool, but chlorine and salt water can strip moisture and leave hair feeling dry. My solution? A hair mask afterwards!
Our vitamin-infused conditioner is great for this and my hair feels so soft after! I apply it to damp hair and leave it on for 10-15 minutes.
The science: Vegan Keratin and Argan Oil, key ingredients in our conditioner, help reduce breakage and repair the look of damaged strands. Our exclusive blend of vitamins, nutrients, and botanicals restores strength and shine!
Regular meals over restriction
The habit: Nourishing your body, rather than restricting, is one of the most protective things you can do for your hair. I focus on what I can add into my diet to nourish my body (like healthy fats) rather than removing things.
The science: Rapid calorie restriction is another factor that can trigger hair shedding. Certain nutritional gaps can actually push hair follicles from the anagen (“growing”) phase into the telogen (“resting”) stage of the hair growth cycle.
Scalp serum each night before bed
The habit: Our scalp serum has sold out multiple times and for good reason! It’s packed with clinically-backed peptides and actives for fuller, thicker hair. I section my hair and really take my time to massage it in.
The science: Scalp massage helps to stimulate blood flow to the follicle. Research shows that just four minutes a day can increase hair thickness!
Targeted supplementation
The habit: One daily capsule of Hair + Energy — crowned #1 hair supplement four years in a row in Australian pharmacy.*^
This was the very first product in the JSHealth Vitamins range and has become a staple in thousands and thousands of haircare routines (mine included)!
The science: Hair + Energy is formulated with exclusive JSHealth Miracle Kelp™ and Zinc. Kelp is a natural source of Iodine that grows stronger, healthier strands. Zinc also supports the hair growth cycle from within.*
Plus, my hair styling hacks:
- Claw clips are my go-to because they are gentle and reduce pulling
- I use our scalp serum as a styling serum/gel to slick back my hair
- I opt for thick, soft scrunchies instead of thin ones to prevent breakage
- Always pat dry when wet and use a wide-tooth comb instead of hard brushes
Try out these rituals, and see how your hair feels and looks! Remember, consistency is key for transformation.
With love,
Jess xx
