Healthy Honeymoon Part 1 – Keemala, Phuket: An Enchanted Escape in the Rainforest

Since Dean and I were married in Koh Samui, our first honeymoon spot was close by – the bustling, busy town of Phuket. But we found a new hidden gem – Keemala. Away from the hustle and bustle in the rainforest lies an enchanted healthy escape: a luxury hotel – and it is brand spanking new.

This tropical wonderland must be added to your bucket list.

The place:

Located in the rainforest of Phuket, Keemala is about 40 minutes from the airport and 10 minutes from the main town, Patong. The location is quiet and secluded; you wouldn’t know you were anywhere close to noise or chaos.

The setting is peaceful and idyllic, and you really feel you have escaped from the business of life. This is a place to go to if you enjoy a quiet kind of holiday, and it’s exactly what Dean and I needed after our wedding. We had 4 lovely nights here and it was perfect.

The accommodation:

This was the highlight for me: the rooms are absolute 5 star luxury. No faults.

We had a tent pool villa with a private pool. It is one of the most romantic rooms I have ever stayed in.

The bath is stunning and the bed is literally the best hotel bed I have experienced. Truth!

Another fantastic feature? They provide you with your own butler, and they are the kindest people. I also loved that raw nuts and coconut water are complimentary to enjoy in your room.

The food:

Healthy and Thai style. If you are health conscious or suffer from food intolerance e.g.: gluten free, Keemala will graciously accommodate these needs. I don’t eat much gluten, so they had a variety of gluten-free alternatives, which are not necessarily easy to access in Thailand.

The breakfast was delish – I loved the quinoa porridge with fruit and coconut milk. Their omelets were great too. There is a fantastic juice/smoothie menu – Dean really enjoyed the chocolate smoothie bowl. I also loved their stir-fries served with brown rice for lunch.

The wine and seafood selection for dinner is great, and you must try the smoked fresh coconuts – yummy!

You can experience an incredibly healthy schedule at Keemala, and can make it as busy or as relaxed as you wish. They offer a variety of yoga, meditation, walks, aqua aerobics, Qigong and spa treatments.

A typical day looked like this:

9am – Wake up to practice yoga or Qigong on the beach, or you can experience a walk into the town on ‘The Heritage Walk’

10am – Healthy breakfast. The quinoa porridge, Bircher muesli and eggs were delicious.

11am – Pool time or massage

IMG_87431pm – Healthy Thai style lunch. I loved the prawn stir-fry, brown rice, papaya salad and sautéed garlic broccoli.

3pm – Relax by your private pool or enjoy the nearby beaches

unspecified-16pm – Drink on the patio or on their incredible roof top

8pm – Dinner in the restaurant – candle lit and romantic – or dinner in your room

What I loved most:

  • The destination dining – they served a romantic and healthy dinner at our private pool one evening, with red wine, seafood, papaya salad and delicious coconut sorbet to finish off. It was delicious and oh-so-romantic.

  • The bedroom – romantic and luxurious
  • The butler service – incredible service!
  • The scenery – the cottages amongst the forest are exceptional and so unique

What I took home from the experience:

  • Quiet holidays are important and you get to really REST your body
  • I love experiencing different cultures and their unique cuisine – you have to embrace it!
  • It is important to be patient when you don’t speak the native language – kindness must be practiced, always.
  • Sometimes it is so healthy and important to do NOTHING
