My Non-Negotiable 4-Step Morning Routine

Setting yourself up with a consistent morning routine is one of the most effective ways to get into a positive, productive headspace for the day. While my morning routine varies depending on where I am, one thing’s for certain: I always prioritise self-care. Even just 15 minutes in the morning can put you in the right frame of mind and set your pace for the day. Here are four things that I do every morning:

  1. Practise deep belly breathing and affirmations

As soon as I wake up, I make a conscious effort to not looking at my phone. Instead, I spend a few minutes taking deep belly breaths. This helps me connect with my breath and feel centered. I also love to repeat positive affirmations. Saying, ‘I love myself just as I am’ and ‘I’m grateful for the abundance in my life’ puts me in a good headspace and connects me with a deep sense of gratitude that I carry with me throughout the day. I also like to sit and meditate for 10 minutes or do the JSHealth Body Love Meditation, which can be found in my 8-week Program.

  1. Scrape that tongue

One of the first things I do when I get out of bed is scrape my tongue. This ancient Ayurvedic practice removes toxins, bacteria and dead cells from the tongue. Cleaning the tongue opens up the pores and helps our taste buds function optimally, which aids digestion. After, I prepare a cup of hot water with a squeeze of lemon, which gets the gastric juices flowing and stimulates digestion.

  1. Get moving

It’s so important to get your body moving and I love the rush of endorphins that exercise gives me. I like to listen to my body and exercise according to my mood. If I need something more grounding, I’ll go for a walk or do some yoga. If I want to sweat it out, I’ll do some weight training or HIIT (high-intensity interval training).

  1. Make a nourishing breakfast

After exercising comes the most important part of my morning routine: breakfast. I usually alternate between the JSHealth protein power smoothie or my favourite on-the-go bircher muesli. You can find my favourite breakfast recipes in my second book, Living The Healthy Life. After breakfast, I enjoy my one-a-day coffee, which is usually an almond milk piccolo latte.
